Healthy Debate

Healthy Debate publishes journalism about health care in Canada by the people whose lives it touches the most, from physicians, patients and caregivers to health journalists, academics, and advocates. Its unique focus on giving a platform to health-care insiders allows provides detailed coverage of the inner workings—and dysfunctions—of this important sphere of Canadian society. OSSU has partnered with Healthy Debate to develop articles on topics relevant to patient-oriented research. Here are some of the articles related to patient-oriented research.

  • Healthy Debate is creating a detailed, summary report of the OSSU roundtable content geared towards a broad audience that includes patients, caregivers and policymakers in Ontario and beyond. Part 1 of this report focuses on the policy round tables conducted in 2023 – including on aging, primary care, mental health, and patient reported outcome/experience measures (PROMs/PREMs). To be released May 2025.

An Environmental Scan of Patient Engagement Infrastructure in Ontario Research Institutions (2025)

This environmental scan, commissioned by the Patient Partnership Advisory Council (PPAC) of the Ontario SPOR SUPPORT Unit (OSSU), sought to better understand  institutional and program supports for sustainable patient partnership in health and health services research in Ontario, both currently and beyond 2026.

Ladders of Engagement (2018)

In this paper, developed for the Patient Partners Working Group by Jennifer Johannesen (a patient partner in research herself), the concept of the ‘ladder of engagement’ is investigated from the patient partner lens, rather than the research project lens. A webinar on “Ladders of Engagement”, held on April 10, 2019, features the work from this paper.


Ontario SPOR SUPPORT Unit Response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic (May 2020 – Sep 2021)

These reports summarizes how OSSU’s research centres have pivoted their focus to tackling critical issues and unmet needs regarding COVID-19 utilizing patient-oriented approaches to health and health services research.
